What is an escape room?An escape room is a game in which a team of players are locked (not actually locked in!) in a room and must work together to discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks that will allow them to escape in a limited amount of time. Our new outdoor escape games involve similar challenges, but take place outdoors in the area around Next Gen Escapes and involve some light walking.
-
Where are the escape games located?Next Gen Escapes is located inside of Treble Court at 29 Peel St, Gisborne 4010. You will see the big yellow Tāiki e! Next Gen sign, located next to the Gisborne Volunteer Centre. Our outdoor escape experiences take place in the area around these premises, but start at the Next Gen Escapes building.
-
Can we just turn up and play without a booking? No. All players must use the online booking system in advance of play through the website. We’re very busy so booking is the best approach!
-
How long does a game last? The indoor escape room (Salvation Rising) has a maximum game time of 60 minutes, while the outdoor escape experiences (Blackout, Operation Mindfall, and Christmas Adventure) have a maximum of 1 hour 30 minutes. For all games you should arrive 10 minutes before your booking for a game briefing.
-
Is it scary? No – there aren’t any scary surprises or zombies jumping out of cupboards. It’s a fun, engaging atmosphere where you’ll end up laughing most of the time.
-
What happens? What do I need to do?You should arrive 10 minutes before the start of your game time to have a briefing with our Game Masters. When everyone in your group has arrived, our Game Masters will brief you on game rules and take you into your room (for the indoor game), or provide you a tablet and any other instruction (for the outdoor games). Indoor Escape Room (Salvation Rising): Once you are in your room, you have 60 minutes to solve a mystery and find the way out of the room by working through a series of puzzles. It’s a live escape game so you are in a real room – it’s not played on a computer! Game Masters will be watching you on camera, and you can ask them for hints along the way if you get stuck. Remember–you’ve only got 60 minutes to solve the mystery! Outdoor Escape Experiences (Blackout, Operation Mindfall, and Christmas Adventure): Once you have been assigned your tablet and other resources, you will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the game. The tablet will provide you with locations on a map (in the neighbouring area) that you will walk to in order to uncover clues and puzzles to solve the mystery!
-
Will I be locked in a room? (indoor games)No. Our rooms are never locked and you are free to leave at any point. Leaving the room does not end the game or stop it.
-
What if I don’t escape in time? Our Game Masters will give you the option of being guided through the remaining puzzles to escape, or if you would prefer to come back and have another go you can exit the game at this point and make another booking to try again. Some people like to come back and solve it themselves, others want to know the secret!
-
What happens if we get stuck on a puzzle? Our Game Masters are watching you on camera and are there to help when you get stuck. The Game Master will ask if you would like a hint, or alternatively you can ask for one at any time.
-
Do you have different escape rooms? We have one indoor escape room (Salvation Rising) and three outdoor escape experiences (Blackout, Operation Mindfall, and Christmas Adventure) on offer. The task – escaping the room – is the same in all our games, but all games have totally different mysteries and puzzles.
-
What if I am claustrophobic? The indoor escape room is small so this could be an issue for some. Talk to us and let us know, we want to accommodate as much as we can to make it an enjoyable experience. Leaving the entry door open slightly is always an option, we want everyone to have fun! Alternatively, check out our outdoor escape games!

Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the premises. Having fun is the main goal of our games, we recommend saving the victory shots until after your win!
